The retailer’s latest newborn collection has been Cradle to Cradle Certified at the Gold level.
Clothing and accessories featured in H&M’s new collection are made from 100% organic cotton and feature ‘room to grow’ details such as adjustable waists and foldable waistbands and cuffs.
The pieces can be easily passed along once outgrown, and when they are worn out, the fabrics are all eventually compostable in a home compost.
In order to achieve Cradle to Cradle certification, each product in the newborn collection was assessed across five categories of sustainability performance, including material health, product circularity, clean air and climate protection, water and soil stewardship, and social fairness.
To earn the certification, H&M worked closely with supply chain partners to ensure each product in the collection has been created using materials which are free from harmful chemicals and without plastic or metal trims. The range is also manufactured using 100% recycled water and renewable energy.
Sofia Lofstedt, head of kidswear design at H&M, commented: “Achieving Cradle to Cradle certified at the gold level for this newborn collection helps assure new parents that the items aren’t just comfy and timeless; they are also as sustainable as they are adorable. We are proud to have achieved one of the highest levels of certification, and to share our sustainability progress with our customers.”
There are 12 pieces in the Cradle to Cradle certified range, including tie-wrap long sleeve tops, bottoms, a tie-wrap jacket, hats, a blanket and snuggle blanket. The items are designed with a colour palette of warm oat melange, light sage green and soft yellow, with pops of tangerine and dusty rose and prints feature illustrated fruits and vegetables.
