AIS confirms cancellation of September Toy Buying Event

Cancellation follows latest government guidance on public gatherings; event had been due to take place on September 29-30.

AIS’ PlaY-room division has today (August 4) confirmed the cancellation of the Toy Buying Event which had been due to take place on September 29 and 30.

A statement from the company said that it had been optimistic following the government announcement on July 17 that business events and exhibitions could resume on October 1, subject to the completion of some pilots.

As a result of this government guidance, where possible, AIS is moving several of its Buying Events to after October 1 – including beds, housewares and linens.

However, for some categories, lead times do not permit the events to be pushed back including toys and fashion.

While AIS said that it had previously received confirmation that it could still host smaller buying meetings in August and September, the government announcement on Friday July 31 putting on hold the relaxation of rules regarding gatherings of up to 30 people, means it can no longer run the planned events.

The statement from Miles Penhallow, head of toys and children’s gifts at PlaY-room, continued: “Our head of operations has been working tirelessly in discussion with the local authorities, Public Health England, Trading Standards and our local MP to understand what AIS can do for its members and suppliers in this rapidly changing environment to facilitate buying meetings, but we have now to accept that despite our best efforts we are unable to run these events pre 1st October.

“It is, therefore, with regret that we have to confirm the cancellation of our Toy Buying Event and now look forward to welcoming members, suppliers and visitors to our 2021 Independent Toy and Gift Show.

“Thank you to our suppliers for their continued support and understanding as we endeavour to find workable solutions to support both our members and suppliers in these unprecedented times.”

The 2021 Independent Toy and Gift Show is due to take place on Tuesday April 13 and Wednesday April 14 at Cranmore Park.
