CMA looking at Hasbro’s takeover of eOne

Watchdog considering if deal would create a “lessening of competition within any market or markets in the UK for goods or services”.

The Competition and Markets Authority is taking a look into the £3.3bn takeover of eOne by Hasbro.

The CMA said in a statement today (November 21) that it was considering whether the deal would create a “lessening of competition within any market or markets in the United Kingdom for goods or services”.

It is asking for people to get in touch to raise any potential objections. If it judges that the submissions are serious enough, then it will launch a full investigation into the takeover which could see it order changes or even block the transaction entirely.

Hasbro’s surprise swoop for eOne – which is home to preschool series including Peppa Pig and PJ Masks – came in August, with Darren Throop, ceo of eOne, saying at the time that there was a “strong cultural fit” between the two companies.

The deal has received shareholder approval back in October.
